You may be wondering what this post has to do on my blog, since it’s all about beauty, but I decided I may pop up here and there with other things. I do love everything about makeup and beauty in general, but I have other interests, you know? Music is one of my biggest passions, although I can’t carry a tune for the life of me. In fact, one of my first jobs was working at a radio station so, that kind of stuck with me. I also enjoy reading and watching movies, so you can tell I had a couple of weeks off because I was able to dedicate some time to my other passions as well.
I recently saw the controversial movie 365 Days, you know the one where 70% of the movie they have sex and the rest is made of shopping montages. I think it was a crap movie (please don’t be offended it you liked it), but the actors were rather decent and the soundtrack….mmmm, found a few little gems on there. The music was mismatched for some scenes, but the songs were still great.
So, that got me thinking of the songs and artists I discovered thanks to bad movies and low and behold, what comes to mind? The Twilight Saga movies, the Fifty Shades of Grey movies and now the 365 Days movie. You may wonder why I’ve seen them all. Well, I do read some erotica books now and then and I’m curious to see how they are brought to live in movie version. Plus, I had a slight obsession with vampires when I was a teen, but didn’t we all? (I do still like Twilight to be honest, even with all its faults, just because of the characters, they had such great potential).
But, now it’s not the time to do an essay on movies based on women’s sexual fantasies (maybe another time), I would just like to share with you my playlist of songs I discovered thanks to these movies, just to feel like I’m not in the minority here.
Let’s start with the 5 Twilight Movie, since they are the oldest. Now, when it comes to the first Twilight movie, of course Muse and Linkin Park were already established artists in my book, especially since I was listening to plenty of alternative rock at that time. I loved both Supermassive Black Hole (I don’t care what anyone says, that baseball scene is a fine example of excellent cinematography) and Leave Out All the Rest (RIP Chester, you were a truly talented singer and your voice always gave me chills). But, asides from these two bands, the other artists were completely new to me. What I also loves from the soundtrack were the following songs:
Full Moon by The Black Ghosts is one of those hunting songs that makes the perfect companion to listen to in your headphones when you go on a walk and you don’t want anybody bothering you. I liked the sound and the voice of the lead singer a lot.
Spotlight by Mutemath was another one of my favorites because it was so upbeat and it made me want to use it for running or working out. I don’t do that anymore more (unfortunately), but I still love listening to the song.
Now, moving on to the second movie in the series, New Moon, I knew about Thom Yorke (Hearing Damage is also a great song) , Muse (I Belong To You, loved it), and The Killers (didn’t like their song on this soundtrack). There was also a still unknown Lykke Li there, but Possibility was not one of my favorite songs. Other songs that I liked were:
Meet Me On The Equinox by Death Cab For Cutie was certainly catchy and I also loved the lead singer’s voice. For me, it’s always important to like the voice, as well as the instrumental.
Friends by Band Of Skulls is just the perfect friendship anthem, like that song that you play when you’re hanging out with your squad, you know? Loved it.
Satellite Heart by Anya Marina was one of those mellow songs to listen to that makes me think about someone that was part of my life that I miss to this day.
Finally, No Sound But The Wind by Editors made an impression on me because of the beautiful, deep voice and the piano instrumental.
Hopping to Eclipse, Muse again (with Neutron Star Collision) can do no wrong in my book, Florence + the Machine was a name I was familiar with (although Heavy In Your Arms didn’t do it for me), as well as Sia with My Love (she wasn’t that big then), Cee Lo Green and Vampire Weeekend were all artists I already knew. However, I can’t say that that I particularly liked any of the other songs included on the soundtrack.
On the Breaking Dawn Part 1 soundtrack I really loved Bruno Mars’ It Will Rain, but he was already an established artist and I knew his songs. The only new artist that I discovered and I loved was Christina Perri and her iconic by now A Thousand Years.
Breaking Dawn Part 2 was the soundtrack I probably liked the least (funny how the soundtracks seemed to decrease in appeal to me as the franchise unfolded). There were a few known names there like Ellie Goulding and Green Day but I didn’t particularly liked their songs either.
Now, let’s talk about the (in)famous Fifty Shades of Grey. They went all out with their soundtrack with plenty of mainstream artists like Annie Lennox, The Weeknd, Ellie Goulding, Sia and The Rolling Stones. I loved Earned It and Love Me Like You Do, but the new discovery was Beyonce’s remix of Crazy In Love. Boys and girls that was…something else. Sexy and soultry and just great. She’s Queen B, what can I say?
Fifty Shades Darker also had quite a few mainstream artists on there: Zayn and Taylor Swift (I Don’t Wanna Live Forever was great), Halsey, Tove Lo, John Legend, Nick Jonas and Nicky Minaj (fun fact, the song was co-produced by two Romanian producers) and Sia. What I liked was the cover of The Scientist by Corinne Bailey.
The other interesting song was Cruise by Kygo feat. Andrew Jackson. Kygo hadn’t already blown up like he did (at least not here in Romania) so it was a new artists I discovered and I like several of his songs.
The last movie in the series, Fifty Shades Freed was just like the last Twilight movie. It didn’t do anything special for my ears, despite having artists perform on the soundtrack like Rita Ora and Liam Payne (For You was nice, but not that amazing for me), Dua Lipa, Jessie J and Sia.
And now we get to the movie that inspired this post, 365 Days. Considering that it’s an European production and they probably didn’t have that much to spend on music, the soundtrack consist mostly of some songs sang by the main lead, Michele Morrone (they’re ok and he has a nice voice, but the lyrics are kind of cringy), and the only song I already knew was Mabel’s Don’t Call Me Up. However, I did find some artists and songs that I have on repeat since then.
The Hunted by The Rigs has that ethereal feel to it and it’s disturbing but in a good way, you know what I mean? I can’t get it out of my head.
You Made A Monster by Nick Kingsley and Hannah Hart is just…it’s catchy man. The lyrics are on point, the sound is on point, the performance is perfect. I can’t get enough of it!
The Time Of Our Lives by The Venice Connection is another song I fell in love with. I could have sworn it’s something from here in Eastern Europe because of the instrumental, but it’s not they’re and Italo-American duo. The song is just so…intoxicating. Also, in a good way. What is it with me and adjectives today? I meant to say good things about these songs, really!
Prisoner by Raphael Lake, Aaron Levy and Daniel Murphy is another song that caught my attention. I can’t find any info on the artists, though, which is a shame because I like what I’m hearing. A lot!
Finish Line by SATV Music has that blues feeling to it, the kind of song you expect to hear in a bar somewhere in Texas, you know? It gives me some Kaleo vibes (and I like Kaleo).
The other songs on the soundtrack were also nice, I mean I would listen to them, but these are the ones are going on my favorites list.
What are some cool songs that you discovered thanks to bad movies?
