Philip Kingsley Finishing Touch Polishing Serum review

I got this hair styling product a couple of months back in my Lookfantastic box and although I had only a travel size, it was enough to get 5-6 uses out of it. I wasn’t impressed with other Philip Kingsley products I had tried in the past, but this one was better because it didn’t made my hair look oily, which was the main issue with the said other products.

Packaging:

Both the full size (75 ml) and the travel size come in plastic tubes that have the same white packaging that is differentiated by color according to the line. The pale blue is for the anti-fizz line as far as I could tell. The packaging is made out of sugar cane bio-plastic which is a plus.

Texture:

Although this is marketed as a serum it has the consistency of a gel, clear, that also has a scent. I used it by applying a small amount in the palm of my hand then rubbing my hands together and working the product through the mid-length of my hair. I’m not a fan of the scent (which is supposed to be cherry blossom, by the way, but I don’t think it smells like that) and it does linger for a while in the hair, so that’s something that should betaken into consideration.

Ingredients:

Propylene Glycol, Aqua/Water/Eau, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol, Polyacrylamide, Phenoxyethanol, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Parfum (Fragrance), Polyamide-2, Laureth-7, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Linalool, Hydroxycitronellal, Panthenol, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Retinyl Palmitate, Citronellol, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Cetrimonium Chloride, Geraniol, Tocopherol, Citric Acid.

The key ingredients in this are propylene glycol (conditions and nourishes the hair), provitamin B5 and vitamin A. The product is cruelty free.

Price and accessibility:

Philip Kingsley products are available in Romania just in online stores so you would have to order it to get it. The price for this polishing serum is 22.50 UK pounds on the brand’s official website. It’s a fair price, because even if it’s not a large quantity (just 75 ml), you really don’t need a lot of product to use it on your hair because it has such a thick texture.

My overall opinion:

The main benefits listed for this product are it controls frizz, increases shine, it protects and nourishes and provides silky conditioning. It’s supposed to be applied on damp towel-dried hair or on dried hair, but I used it only on damp hair because I think it would have been to sticky to apply on dry hair.

It does control frizzy hair, it makes the hair looks shiny and my impression was that it helped provide some definition to the individual strands of hair (especially since I have a layered hair cut). While I did use it for 5-6 times, I can’t say I’m a fan because of the sticky feeling I had on my hands when applying it and because of the scent. I prefer more lightweight products when it comes to styling my hair, but that’s just a personal preference.

While I can’t say that this polishing serum is bad or that it doesn’t do what it claims to do, I’m still not a fan of the formulas used for Philip Kingsley products but again, that’s just a matter of personal preference.
