As I mentioned when I started to color my hair with a L’Oreal Excellence hair color from the cool creme line, I also bought a purple shampoo to use once a week because I read that it also helps to prevent any red undertones that might show through brown shades.
Packaging:
The shampoo is available in plastic tubes that contain 200 ml. L’Oreal shampoos come in different colored bottles depending on the range, so, of course, a purple shampoo can only come in a purple bottle.
Texture:
This shampoo is a bit on the thick side and it’s very very purple. But, the good part is that it doesn’t stain the bath tub or anything, it washes right off, even if there are some lingering streaks here and there. It also doesn’t color towels.
Ingredients:
1170883 E, Aqua / Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Coco-Betaine, Glycol Distearate, Cocamide MIPA, CI 60730 / Acid Violet 43, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Hydroxide, Trideceth-6, Iris Florentina Root Extract, Polyquaternium-7, Polyquaternium-10, Salicylic Acid, Limonene, Linalool, Benzyl Salicylate, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzophenone-4, Amodimethicone, Alpha Isomethyl Ionone, Carbomer, Citric Acid, Citronellol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Butylene Glycol, Coumarin, Hexylene Glycol, Amyl Cinnamal, Parfum / Fragrance, (F.I.L C226042 / 2)
The key ingredients in this shampoo is the purple pigment, but I also appreciate the iris root extract in there because it helps to fortify the dermis by limiting the degradation of structural proteins.
Price and accessibility:
L’Oreal products are widely available, including in supermarkets, so I got mine from a Carrefour supermarket for about 5 euros, which is a decent price for a shampoo, especially if it’s one that I use only on weekly basis.
My overall opinion:
It’s important to know that purple shampoo shouldn’t be used frequently. For example, I wash my hair every other day, so I wouldn’t use it that often. This type of shampoo has the tendency to make the hair drier, so that’s why it’s not suitable for frequent use.
I didn’t notice my hair to become drier because I have oily hair as it is, but I still use it just once a week. For now, it’s been about a month since I started to use it and my hair color still looks great. I don’t know if it’s because of the shampoo, or because of the hair color, or a combination of both, but I like the effects. Therefore, I think that purple shampoo is something that even people that use brown hair color should consider if the main goal is to avoid those copper and reddish shades that seem to come through the initial brown shade after a while. I will continue to use it, even if I alternate it with other types of shampoos.
