Soph X Revolution Extra Spice palette review

This is the final Revolution Beauty palette that I review for now because I took some time to play with it for about a week or more before I could give my review on this.

First, let’s start with the technical aspects. This palette contains 18 shades of 0,8 grams each. It’s cruelty-free and vegan. I bought it for about 15,5 euros, so it’s one of the pricier ones. For this brand, of course.

The packaging is gorgeous, it was one of the reasons I bought it. It comes in a plastic case with a rose-gold lid that looks just like a mirror. Sure, you’ll get fingerprints all over it, but it’s easy to wipe away. The shades names are written below each shadow.

The color scheme is very beautiful, in my opinion. I didn’t get the first Soph palette because I didn’t like the colors, but this one has such a nice variety in it. I know who Soph is but honestly, I don’t watch her on YouTube because she’s just not my style, but I do think she did a great job at picking the shades. Although the palette was released during summer, I think it’s very versatile because it has plenty of colors that make me think about the autumn season and that give me some great ideas for looks. I like this being a palette with more shades because the pans are small and the palette is compact and it has a nice mirror. My problem with palettes that have many shades in them is that they can be bulky because the pans are large. I don’t need large pans, let’s be honest, it takes me years to pan an eyeshadow, so I don’t want to pay for a lot of product that I will not use.

Before I give my overall opinion, I’ll say a few words about each of the shades. I swatched them in two series, the first 9 and the last 9, with and without the camera flash. I didn’t use a primer and I applied them with my finger, in one swipe or in 2-3 when I wanted the color to show up more. That’s what I do with all my swatches.

Enchanted – brown-purple matte shade

Lakes – matte olive/army green shade

Brownies – dark matte brown

Chocolate Orange – chocolate milk brown, it has a matte finish with some micro glitter in it

LA Sun – shimmery gold shade, very pigmented, similar to the silver shade in this palette

Aurora – shimmery green-grey shade

Reputation – matte charcoal black

The formula of this palette is similar to the one of the chocolate palettes from Revolution Beauty. The shimmers are better than the mattes and I think they apply well with a flat synthetic brush and you don’t need to add a fixing spray or to get the brush wet. The mattes are so-and-so. They are all pigmented, but with some, you have to work harder than with other because they can become patchy if you’re not careful. Definitely better than the mattes in the cheaper palettes that Revolution Beauty does.

I like my eyeshadows to be buttery and even creamy, regardless if they’re mattes or shimmers, but Revolution Beauty does hard-pressed eyeshadows from what I tried so far. This means that you have to dig your brush a little to pick up the powder, so you have some kickback with most shades. That doesn’t bother me, but this also means that they’re harder for me to work with. For example, I prefer to work with Zoeva eyeshadows or with Revlon eyeshadows, or even with Sephora eyeshadows – from what I have in my collection that is because I must admit I haven’t tried so many eyeshadow formulas so far.

I think that Revolution Beauty products are not exactly to my taste when it comes to how they apply, so I think I will avoid this brand for now. I won’t say I won’t ever buy anything from them, but it must be something really out of the ordinary for me to buy more. For beginners or for those who really want a color scheme in a palette and can’t afford the high-end product, I think they’re a good option. Just be careful about the cute packaging – it really catches your eye and makes you want to buy the products but the quality just isn’t that great. It’s good for drugstore, but I prefer other options more. Keep in mind that this is just my personal preference. I’ve rather have softer eyeshadows, with less pigment but a more buttery formula than eyeshadows that pack a punch but are sometimes chalky.

Overall, I don’t regret buying this palette, as I like the majority of the colors – the shimmers are interesting, the silver an gold are metallic and gorgeous, those shifting shades are also great and some of the mattes were also interesting.
