Cien skincare review

All-focus

For those of you who are not familiar with the Cien brand, these products are available only in Lidl supermarkets. And yes, you heard me right, I’m talking about a supermarket brand. You probably think I’m crazy for even trying something like that, but honestly, I don’t think that the products are worts than other cheap drugstore brands. after all, they’re still tested and they’re all made in Germany, so how bad can they be? They also have a makeup line, but it’s available only from time to time and the products are really not at all appealing. They look very cheap and have such an odd shade range that I have no desire to even try them out.

I decided the products are not that exciting to dedicate them separate posts and they’re also not available everywhere, just in countries where there are Lidl stores so I will refer to all the skincare products I’ve tried out so far from the brand.

Now, if you don’t want to read the whole post and you just want to know how if the products are bad or good, I’m gonna go ahead and say they’re ok. They’re nothing spectacular but I also didn’t have any unpleasant experiences with them so I think that if you’re on a tight budget and you have the possibility to buy them, you could give them a try.

Cien Micellar Water for sensitive skin

All-focus

I often use products for sensitive skin just because my skin tends to become reddish, especially during winter and I don’t want to use products that contain harsh ingredients. This micellar water contains bamboo water, panthenol, and glycerine, it’s alcohol-free and fragrance-free.

Since this is a Cien product it’s very affordable, I think I only paid around 2 euros for a 250 ml bottle. To be honest, I don’t use it to remove my makeup, just to freshen up my skin the morning, so for that purpose, it’s alright. It feels just like water on the skin, nothing too special but I appreciate the fact that it’s not at all drying. Compared to other micellar waters I’ve used…I must say I liked other drugstore products much better.

Cien Eye Make-up Remover

All-focus

This little guy comes in a 100 ml bottle and it was also very affordable, probably around 1,5-2 euros. It has a biphasic formula, the one you have to shake before you use and it claims to remove waterproof makeup as well.

While I appreciate the fact that it doesn’t sting my eyes which can be a problem for me, it doesn’t compare with other makeup removers I’ve tried because it doesn’t remove mascara properly and I don’t appreciate the fact that I have to rub my eyes.

I remember I also used a Cien eye makeup remover in a green bottle that contained aloe vera, but if my memory is not playing tricks on me, that one wasn’t any better than this biphasic one.

Cien Gold Triple Action Cream

All-focus

This face cream is very interesting and rather surprising I must say. The triple action effect is because it moisturizes, it regenerates the skin and it contains sunscreen. It also contains 1% gold, which for such an affordable cream (around 4 euros a tube) it’s not usual to find such a precious ingredient.

It also comes in a very large tube – 100 ml. So for the price, you also get a lot of product. It has a slightly yellow color and it has a faint scent, but it sinks very fast into the skin and it doesn’t feel sticky at all like other cheap creams.

I can’t say that I noticed some miraculous effects or that my skin looks “wow” but it certainly didn’t do any harm. I don’t have any rashes, irritations, pimples or any other skin issues since I’ve used it and I’m about halfway through the tube so I think it’s been over a month. All in all, I think it’s a decent moisturizer for a non-problematic skin. Oh, I have combination skin, but I think this face cream can be used by all skin types, to be honest, because of its consistency and textures.

Cien Nature Soothing Face cream

All-focus

Cien Nature is a line of products containing natural ingredients, but the products are not always available. I have the face cream for sensitive skin with lemon balm and witch hazel ( a very popular ingredient currently) because it was the only option I found at my local Lidl.

This face cream comes in a smaller tuber – 50 ml – or rather a normal-sized tube for a face cream and I think I paid less than 2 euros for it. Despite its name, this is not an all-natural product, it just contains some natural ingredients as well. Like the gold cream mentioned above, I didn’t notice any great effects for the skin but I also didn’t have any issues with it.

Cien Nail Polish Remover Acetone Free

All-focus

Granted, this is not a skincare product but since I have it, I might as well just throw it into the mix. I really like this nail polish remover which is available in two variants I think because it’s gentler on the nails but it does a very good job removing nail polish. I mean usual nail polish, not glitters or other special textures, because I haven’t tried it for something like that. For just a little over 1 euro, you get a 200 ml bottle of nail polish remover and it even has a nice smell.

Honorable mentions (products I don’t currently own but that I’ve tried from the brand)

  • Cien cotton pads – thick and soft at the same time and they come in large packs for less than 1 euro.
  • Cien liquid soap – very affordable, nice consistency and pleasant smell.
  • Cien shower gels – thick consistency, pleasant scents and they cost only around 1 euro/bottle.
  • Cien shampoos – to avoid, at least for they were a big miss because they made me have an itchy scalp, even the anti-dandruff one.

So that’s about all the products that I tried from the Cien brand, at least I’ think I didn’t miss anything. Overall, they’re bot bad for a generic supermarket brand but don’t expect to find any hidden treasures for such low prices. However, I will say that the bath products, the nail polish remover, and the cotton pads are just as good as other more expensive products and it’s worth to pick them up.

    • As far as I know, Cien products are made and sold in Lidl (and possibly Aldi) stores across Europe. Maybe there are some small exporters in Germany or Austria who sell them.
